International Plastic Bag Free Day
July 3, 2017
In an average minute in the world, over 1 million plastic bags are used. Whether it’s buying groceries or purchasing the latest computer games, plastic bags are more often than not the carrying device of our choice. And then, as soon as we get home and unload what we have bought, we toss our plastic bags to one side and forget they exist: the age-old “out of sight, out of mind”.
But have you ever stopped to consider how many plastic bags we go through as a global population in a given year? For most people, the answer is probably not.
Plastic Bags: Visible and Yet Cognitively Invisible.
Therefore, International Plastic Bag Free Day is about raising awareness of the issues generated unnecessarily from our obsessive usage of plastic bags. Plastic bags are used for an average of 25 minutes. They may disappear from our mind but they do not disappear from the planet.
Plastic bags not only contribute towards landfill management issues but can often escape garbage collection and get washed up into streams, rivers and waterways; it is estimated that 80% of marine pollution is plastic. Consequently, these floating plastic bags can significantly affect marine ecosystems, causing completely unnecessary environmental degradation.
International Plastic Bag Free Day is a day of reflection. It is a day in which we can remember that “no man is an island”. The world is interconnected, and society and environment are intertwined; every action we take has broader implications, regardless of whether we see those effects or take not of them. International Plastic Bag Free Day encourages individuals to be more socially responsible and serves to demonstrate how simple lifestyle choices can have a huge impact, be that positive or negative.
Plastic bags are used for an average of only 25 minutes but their impact could last a lifetime…
Plastic Bag Free Day: Join In The Fun
Even if only for a day we encourage you to choose paper bags over plastic bags or bring your own plastic bags. “Bags for life”, in particular, can be fun and allow you to express some individuality. If you’re a business owner, encourage your customers to bring their own bags.
Head over to http://www.plasticbagfreeday.org/ to get involved with events, network with like-minded individuals and explore volunteering opportunities. On the website, you can also share your bag-free stories with others. In addition, be sure to snap your bags for life and share them on social media using the hashtag – #PlasticBagFreeDay. You can also sign up for the Facebook event here (make sure you invite friends and family).
The planet is facing somewhat of a paradox: we are at the height of technical achievement and yet we are as anxiety-ridden as ever before. Unfortunately, many people take for granted the importance of planet’s environmental health – please don’t be one of those people.
Help look after our planet and the planet will look after you.
Take part in International Plastic Bag Free Day and help build a zero waste future.
